Bio

Celia Berdes is an assistant professor and the acting director of the Section on Social & Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Berdes came to the Buehler Center as a staff member in 1985 and subsequently joined the faculty in 2002. Dr. Berdes received her PhD in sociology from Northwestern University in 2001. Dr. Berdes has served as director of research at Presbyterian Homes since April 2002. Founded in 1904, Presbyterian Homes serves older adults through residential and health care programs on campuses in Evanston, Lake Forest, Arlington Heights, and Chicago. Her research interests include long-term residential care and the correlates between quality of care and satisfaction with care; residents and their caregivers, especially the role of affective relationships in quality of care; and the organizational culture and quality of long-term care environments. She is also responsible for optimizing the research-related skills of Presbyterian Homes' staff and facilitating access of academically-based researchers in orde to conduct research at Presbyterian Homes facilities. Dr. Berdes also serves as the director of the Aging Research Registry, a project that links seniors who are willing to be research participants with researchers in aging.
